What is EasyBCD?

EasyBCD is a BCD configuration and management tool. To understand what it does, one must understand BCD first: BCD is Boot Configuration Data, a database that was introduced to the Windows operating systems from Vista onwards. Editing this data allows the user to achieve several things, one of which is switching from one operating system’s bootloader to another. In short, EasyBCD can be used on one operating system to give its user the ability to install/load another operating system on the same device. Hence, for instance, if the user has EasyBCD on a computer with the Windows Vista operating system, he can use it to switch to the Windows XP OS without destroying any of the Vista OS’s files on his computer.

The program allows users to switch from one OS brand to another, in fact: Windows users can run Linux or even Mac OS versions with it, for instance. It can be used to repair the actual system’s BCD as well as to back up the BCD file. These can be useful for system recovery if the BCD ever gets corrupted. Furthermore, the program supports scripting via the NeoGrub utility.
