Authorware is a visual authoring tool that creates a rich-media e-learning applications for corporate networks, CD/DVD, and the Web with applications complying with LMS (learning management systems) standards. It is also flowchart based with distinctive capabilities and with a graphical programming language.
The software was originally produced by Authorware inc. in 1987 and founded Dr. Michael Allen for contribution in the development of PLATO computer-assisted instruction system; later the company merged with MacroMind to form Macromedia and later merged with Adobe.
Authorware has the iconing Interactive icon that encourages interactive learning, along with a complex user-feedback. Interactions involve move object to, along a line, click an object, and hotspot, and user text entry as well as many others. The software also has customizable templates for CBT and WBT, along with student assessment tools. Application of the templates can provide benefits to businesses and schools, and other learning institutions as they create rapidly assembled multimedia training materials without employing professional programmers; the use of the software makes it especially easy to do so as the environment has an intuitive input and output dialogue boxes.
