Windows Live

What is Windows Live?

Windows Live Essentials is a suite of free programs (termed as freeware) by Microsoft that was meant to complement the operating systems of Windows-based computers, piecemeal or as a whole. Some of the programs in this collection of free software used to be part of the standard Windows installation prior to Windows Vista and Windows 7, but were cut out from the final release because Microsoft believed that they are optional components (to save space for the OS) and that they would synergize better with Windows Live services, such as Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Photos. Microsoft typically rolls out new versions of the software in the Live Essentials suite in one go, known as “Waves”; the first Wave or roll out of the suite was on August 2006.

Windows Live Essentials includes the following software: Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Mesh, Windows Live Messenger (and Companion), Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Live Writer, Bing Bar, Windows Live Family Safety, Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector, Microsoft Silverlight, and Windows Live Sign-In Assistant.

Live Essentials can be installed completely, or the user can choose which component can be installed and the others discarded.
