If you are looking for SelfCert, you have come to the right place. We explain what SelfCert is and point you to the official download.

What is SelfCert?

The Microsoft Digital Certificate Utility is a tool that is built into newer editions of the Microsoft Office line starting with Office XP; the executable file is called selfcert.exe. The Digital Certificate Utility is used to create test certificates for Visual Basic Application, or VBA, projects. In a typical usage scenario, the Visual Basic Applications will then be signed using these digital certificates.

The Digital Certificate Utility is an essential component of the Microsoft Office family, and pertains to all applicable software included in the Office line, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Outlook. The Digital Certificate Utility is perfectly safe and is an on-demand service; it also applies to all existing certificates, and such certificates cannot be used for Microsoft Office unless it is turned on and installed.

A digital certificate, or a public key certificate, is a type of authentication procedure or “document” that binds a digital signature with the personal information of the owner or procurer of a certain application. This is essentially for security purposes, ensuring that each copy of software will only be meant for a certain person or organization, and for only a certain type of purpose.
