What is Paintgraphic?
Fanfare’s Paintgraphic is an image or photo editing application available to Japanese consumers. Often described by its developer as an Adobe Photoshop alternative, the software is basically designed to be a cheaper but also more lightweight and responsive photo editing application than its high-priced competitors. All the usual tweaking controls are in it, from tone adjustments to color corrections. But of course, like most other photo editors, the program is also equipped with what can essentially be used as drawing tools, e.g. brushes and vector-editing utilities. It also has the ability to perform layer-based editing, as well as to apply various filters to layers of an image.
Paintgraphic is a Windows operating system program, and like many other such applications, takes its interface design cues from the Windows applications of its time. The Microsoft Office UI influence is clear in its design, in fact, which also allows users to work from a large, full window displaying the graphic being edited, with the tools stacked in a large, floating toolbar on the right side. Users can run the program only on Windows computers—the second edition of the software was confirmed to run on XP, Vista and 2000.
