Norton Utilities

What is Norton Utilities?

Norton Utilities is a comprehensive suite of computer protection software, ranging from home to office security software and individual user group security utilities.

The pioneering version of Norton Utilities, the 1.0, was released in 1982 in a DOS1.x platform featuring the UNERASE utility. It was packaged in a floppy disk and sold for $80. Its designer was Peter Norton, who eventually sold his company to Symantec but still retained the Norton brand.

The Norton Utilities Premiere Edition Version 15 was released for Vista, Windows XP and Windows 7 in December 2010. This package consists of the Norton Disk Doctor, Norton Speed Disk, Registry Cleaner, Restore and Defragmenter, Disk Cleaner and Defragmenter, Restore Center, Process Viewer, Performance Test, System Optimizer, Service and Startup Manager and the pioneering UNERASE feature.

Norton Utilities for Mac was also available as a separate security suite for the Macintosh OS users. The features are similar as those of the Windows utility suite. The pioneering version was made available in 1990 with a system requirement of a mac Plus and at least 1 MiB of memory capacity. However in 2004, Symantec shelved any more plans for new Norton Utilities for Mac to focus on internet security software for the Mac.
