What is MSN Messenger?
MSN Messenger is Microsoft’s Instant Messaging service provided to Windows clients. The first version of the IM service, launched in 1999, provided users with a chat service and friends list only. The software was further developed to include other features.
Later versions enabled the user to change the skin/theme of the IM window; share files, photos, music and other data with IM friends through a file transfer protocol; make voice calls, hide window frame, and add mobile contacts to their friends list. MSN Messenger 6.0 also included emoticons, wink features, and customization tools that enabled the user to create their avatars.
The Instant Messaging client was generally installed with Windows OS installers, beginning with Windows ME. MSN Messenger 7.5 included additional features such as Dynamic Backgrounds and Voice Clips. The Voice Clips feature allowed the user to record a voice message that is 15 seconds long, and then send this to an IM friend.
MSN Messenger 7.5 was the last update for the IM service before it was renamed and re-packaged as Windows Live Messenger.
