Microsoft Works Suite

What is Microsoft Works Suite?

Microsoft Works Suite is a package of integrated applications by Microsoft that is less expensive and smaller with fewer features than Microsoft Office. Its main functions include spreadsheet, word processor and database management. Its development has been discontinued. Its later versions have dictionary and calendar features, while the older versions have a terminal emulator. The Works Portfolio provides functions that are similar to Microsoft Binder.

Microsoft Works is compatible with Microsoft Office document formats XLS and DOC. Works Word Processor can open Microsoft Word documents, while Works Spreadsheet can open Microsoft Excel workbooks. The latest Version 9.0 offers compatibility with Windows Vista. It has two editions, the ad-free paid version available in OEM [original equipment manufacturer] and retail, and the ad-supported free version Works SE available to OEMs only.

You need to install Office System 2007 Compatibility Pack to enable Works Spreadsheet and Word Processor to export and import Office Open XML formats. Newer versions of Works Spreadsheet uses the same Excel format as Microsoft Office Excel with a different extension XLR. Gnumeric, an open-source spreadsheet application, can open Works Spreadsheet [WKS] files.
