Microsoft Security Essentials

If you are looking for Microsoft Security Essentials, you have come to the right place. We explain what Microsoft Security Essentials is and point you to the official download.

What is Microsoft Security Essentials?

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-virus and all-around anti-malware and security program by Microsoft for the Windows operating system platform, and based on the security programs developed by the development company Sybari, based in New York (which they acquired).

The Microsoft Security Essentials replaces the aging Windows Defender and the more recent Windows Live OneCare, a subscription-based anti-virus and security software for Windows Vista and Windows 7; although not included in default installations of Vista and Windows 7, Security Essentials is free for all home users of the Windows OS, regardless of edition (except for enterprises).

Security Essentials shares the same virus and malware definitions and engine (called the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine) for their more high-end product, Forefront, which is intended to fulfill the same niche as SE for server environments. Microsoft Security Essentials is available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 for 32- and 64-bit variants.

Security Essentials is, according to a recent survey, the second most popular anti-virus software in the world, and has been met with overwhelmingly positive responses from users and critics alike. By default, it checks for (and downloads, if any are available) updates from the Windows Update site three times a day, ensuring maximum protection.
