The Microsoft Office Starter, replacing the previous Microsoft Works, is, as evident from the name, a starting suite of Office that is meant for new PC owners who are not ready yet to shell out the cash (or still hesitating if they really need a full-featured Office product) for the full version of Office.
With that said, the Office Starter only includes Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, and does not include the usual additions like Microsoft Powerpoint and Microsoft Outlook. Word and Excel, in addition, are also limited to basic functions (for example Microsoft Word in an Office Starter is similar in breadth of function as Windows Live Writer). However, the main advantage of the Office Starter Kit is that users can upgrade to the full version anytime using the upgrade tool built into the system.
Office Starter cannot be purchased and only comes preloaded with new PCs at the very point of manufacture, has no other charges, and does not expire, powered only by advertising. Microsoft clarifies that it’s not a trial, since it has a perpetual license, and they are not forcing the users to upgrade to the full suite.
