What is iPod?

iPod is one of the common products developed by Apple Inc. It is a type of media player that is created in a sleek and lightweight design, making it a portable music and video player. There is a variety of versions launched which are all hard drive based. These are iPod classic, iPod touch (touchscreen player), iPod nano and iPod shuffle. iPod players come in various storage capacity sizes. There are 2 GB which is featured in iPod shuffle and 160 GB for iPod classic.

All models of the iPod classic store data on the internal hard drive. The rest of the iPod versions store media using an integrated flash memory, which makes it compatible with the Microdrive miniature hard drive. One common feature they all have is that they are considered as external data storage devices of music as well as videos and photos.

All versions of iPod play different audio and video file formats. For audio formats, these include MP3, AAC, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and AIFF. For videos, they can accept files of MPEG-4 or AVC and QuickTime formats. It also supports some photo file formats like JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP and TIFF.
