Google Talk

If you are looking for Google Talk, you have come to the right place. We explain what Google Talk is and point you to the official download.

What is Google Talk?

Google Talk is similar to the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and Yahoo Messenger, as it is an instant messaging (IM) platform and service, also known as Google Chat or Gchat (the latter a colloquial term among its many users). Like most modern IM clients, it provides both text chat and voice chat options, and compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, and BlackBerry, Android, and Chrome operating system. In addition, if you don’t like to download and install the desktop application, you can instead install the Google Talk browser plugin, which enables you to talk in video using the Google Talk chat service on the Internet, such as from Gmail. Both are free to download and install.

Though having somewhat less features than its contemporaries, Google Talk is widely considered a good alternative to most chat applications, especially for users of Gmail (since Google Talk is integrated into Google’s mail service). However one of the main features of Google Talk is interoperability; it uses the XMPP, an open chat protocol, which means Google Talk can function with other chat clients that uses this protocol. An example of such a chat client is Chikka, and XMPP enables Chikka and Google Talk users to exchange messages with each other.
