Firebird SQL Server

What is Firebird SQL Server?

Firebird offers ANSI SQL-92 features as a relational SQL database that can operate on Windows, Linux and some Unix systems. It provides output, language support and concurrency for triggers and stored procedures. It is used in production with various names such as InterBase. InterBase 6.0 has been released as open source since 2000. Firebird has begun with these open sources and is now supported by the open source community and Firebird Foundation.

Stored Procedures are operational routines on the server that respond to client calls during use of applications. They are pre-compiled and can readily be executed without the need to be sent through the network for parsing. It is advantageous by reducing the complexity of client applications thus requiring less maintenance, by eliminating the need for recompilation and redistribution and by increasing productivity due to less network traffic.

Triggers are special Stored Procedures that have their own defined routines and are connected to a view or table for automatic firing [execution] every time a record is updated, added or deleted from the table or view. They are not used by direct calls but rather through the commands UPDATE, INSERT or DELETE. They are written in Trigger language and Stored Procedures, and are able to use Exceptions. It provides advantages such as reduced application maintenance, implementation of table modification logging mechanism, automatic calling of generators and assigning their values to fields, automatic effectivity of content limitations and conditions, automatic application notifications by event calls, and automatic field uppercasing to enable case-insensitive searches.

Firebird uses the character set assigned by every VARCHAR or CHAR field to store bytes that compose the character string correctly. You have to define a collation to be able to compare and sort strings. The collation defines the order of your sorts and the uppercase conversions for your string. Firebird cannot perform transliteration between character sets. This means you to define the correct values on the client and on the server.
