The Avira Antivir Personal is a free antivirus package from Avira, a German security software company with about 410 employees worldwide. Avira’s patented scanning engine, first known as Luke Filewalker (in reference to the Star Wars protagonist Luke Skywalker), was first launched in 1988 and has been since licensed to Ashampoo, Ad-Aware, and Webroot, and has seen several iterations and improvements over the years, with a major overhaul last 2008 that increased scanning speed considerably. Avira is one of the most widely used antivirus software in the world with an estimated 100 million users globally as of late 2009, and writes products for several platforms, including Windows, Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and Solaris. Avira has often been criticized for its slow servers which makes updating a hassle, but it has since made progress in this regard by adding an additional 6 GB of bandwidth to their servers.
The Avira family of products have three main editions, the Antivir Personal (which is completely free for personal and home use), the fuller Antivir Premium, and the more enterprise-oriented Antivir Internet Security. All three versions feature stringent antivirus, antidialer, antirootkit, and antispyware/antiadware capabilities. Avira has garnered several industry awards for their efforts.
