Microsoft Streets & Trips

If you are looking for Microsoft Streets & Trips, you have come to the right place. We explain what Microsoft Streets & Trips is and point you to the official download.

What is Microsoft Streets & Trips?

The Microsoft Streets & Trips software, which in Europe is called Microsoft AutoRoute, is a mapping and route-planning software used to plan your itinerary in advance and to find the shortest or more efficient path to a destination. First developed in the late 80s by NextBase Ltd of UK simply as “AutoRoute”, it was later sold to Microsoft in 1994 and in 2000 was rebranded as Microsoft Streets & Trips, although its name was retained for European markets. Before MSN Maps (and by extension Bing Maps) were conceived, the Streets & Trips software pioneered this kind of technology, combing maps from Encarta before it was pulled out; this combined technology would later be used in Bing Maps, which by then had been trumped by Google Maps.

Technically, the Streets & Trips software is a subset of the Microsoft MapPoint service and application, which allows users to integrate and view maps, among other things; the Streets & Trips is a more user-friendly version of this, although its scope is more limited. The Streets & Trips is limited strictly to the North American region (Canada, the United States, and Mexico). It also has GPS support so it can be used as a satellite navigation system.
