If you are looking for avast! Free Antivirus, you have come to the right place. We explain what avast! Free Antivirus is and point you to the official download.

What is avast! Free Antivirus?

One of the leading antivirus software in the world – with over 165 million users worldwide – the Avast! family of antivirus software comes in either a free or pro edition, with the latter being a paid version but bundled with more features and more in-depth technical and customer support. As of this writing, Avast! Free Antivirus is on version 6, which was released November 2011; though tracing its origins back to 1988, the first commercially available Avast! Antivirus software was released on 1995, which was also the first antivirus software for Windows 95.

This free antivirus also includes anti-spyware capability, plus anti-rootkit and self-protection capabilities, which safeguards the core components of Avast from being damaged, modified, or deleted by viruses or malware attacks. Central to its host of features is its use of individual modules called Shields (such as P2P Shield and Web Shield, among others) that can be disabled or configured independently, plus such standard features as auto-update, scheduled scanning, quarantine and virus information, and even its own browser based on the Chromium series, which runs on a separate process thus making it “invisible” from the user’s system.

Newer versions of Avast can also be customized with different skins and voiceover languages.
