Mr. Backup Nintendo 64 ROM dump

Files that contain the .z64 file extension are ROM image files that are associated with the Nintendo 64 video game system. A Z64 file contains a copy of a game cartridge that was used with the Nintendo 64 system.

Z64 files allow users to play popular Nintendo 64 games on their computers without the need for the actual Nintendo 64 gaming system or the actual N64 game cartridge. In order to play a .z64 file on a computer, however, a Nintendo 64 emulator must be installed on the user's hard drive. Files with the .z64 file extension are similar to files that are saved with the .n64 file extension.

All known file formats using extension .Z64

While Mr. Backup Nintendo 64 ROM dump is a popular type of Z64-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .Z64 file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Split ZIP Archive (part 64) File

Files with the .Z64 file extension are split ZIP archive files, created by WinZIP or compatible tools.

WinZIP and other compression tools take collections of files and compress them into a single archive file, normally to save hard drive space and to make distributing the file collection easier.

Archive files can get very big, and sometimes it is necessary to split them into smaller parts to fit on CDs or USB drives. When an archive file is split, each part of the archive is assigned a numbered file suffix. Files with the Z64 extension are part 64 of the split ZIP archive. The last part gets the file extension ZIP.

To access the content of the .Z64 file, you will need to have all the archive part files in the same folder and open the last file (with file extension ZIP) with your compression tool. Some tools can also extract the archive if you select the Z01 file, but others will fail, so make it a habit to always open the .ZIP file.
