What are XCF files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an XCF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your XCF files.

What is an XCF file?

An .XCF file is a GIMP image format file.

Files that contain the .xcf file extension are used to store GIMP project files. These files are created with the GNU Image Manipulation Program, and an XCF file is to GIMP what a PSD file is to Photoshop - an image project file.

The GNU Image Manipulation Program is a freeware image editing software application. XCF files save paths, layers, channels, guides, and the current image selection of the image that is being edited. The image data that is saved in the file is compressed using the simple RLE algorithm. The XCF file format was created by the eXperimental Computing Facility, which consists of a group of students whose goals are aimed at advancing computer sciences.
