What are WIN files and how to open them

What is a WIN file?

WIN files have multiple uses, and Windows Backup is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Windows Backup File

Files that contain the .win file extension are most commonly used for Windows system backup files. These files contain backup copies of the Windows files on a user's computer.

If the original Windows files that are located on a user's computer happen to become corrupt or are accidentally deleted, the WIN files can be used to restore the data on the user's system.

How to open WIN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the WIN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your WIN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

The ArchiCAD software also uses the .win file extension. These WIN files contain geometric description language files that are used by the ArchiCAD application.

SMSQ/E hard disk image

SMSQ/E is a computer operating system for the Atari ST. It consists of a QDOS compatible SMS kernel, SuperBASIC interpreter (SBasic), a complete set of SuperBASIC procedures and functions, and a set of extended device drivers.

These files contain an image (exact copy) of a hard drive with that operating system installed.
