What is a TGA file?

A .TGA file is a Truevision TARGA Image file.

Files that contain the .tga file extension are raster graphic files using a file format created by Truevision. The TGA file format is used by high-end paint application programs and is commonly used for video game graphics.

While the TGA file format is not as popular as the TIFF and PCX formats, it was one of the first file formats that was able to handle images with up to 16 million unique colors. TGA files are very common due to their versatility and lack of patent.

Truevision, Inc., the company that originally developed this file format, is no longer in existence as it was acquired by Avid Technology.
