What are TEXTCLIPPING files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a TEXTCLIPPING file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your TEXTCLIPPING files.

What is a TEXTCLIPPING file?

A .TEXTCLIPPING file is a Mac TextClipping file.

The .textclipping file extension, more appropriately written as .textClipping with a capitalized 'C', is typically associated with Macintosh computers.

This file type is generated when a user selects a particular text and drags it anywhere within the Macintosh computer. For instance, if a string of text from a Word document or a quote from a piece of prose is selected, the user can drag this text to the desktop, and the system will treat it as a clipping. This clipping can then be selected again and placed wherever the user needs it. This file is in the .textClipping format.

.textClipping files store not only the selected text but also the formatting information, including font styles, tables, and bullets and numbering. They are often used for saving text fragments from web pages and other documents. These clippings can be copied into other documents by dragging the files into any text editor or word processor, serving as an alternative to the Mac OS X copy and paste operation. Mac OS X creates .textClipping filenames using the first several characters from the highlighted text. These files can be viewed by double-clicking them in Mac OS X. When opened, their text can be manually selected, copied, and then pasted into another document.
