What are PPD files and how to open them

What is a PPD file?

PPD files have multiple uses, and PostScript Printer Description is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

PostScript Printer Description

PPD is an acronym for PostScript Printer Description and these files contain information that pertains to the font, paper size, resolution, DPI, and other features of the associated PostScript printer. Many printer drivers will use PPD files to determine the capabilities of that particular printer.

The PostScript language was created by Adobe in 1985. Today it is the industry standard for this particular file type and the majority of printers that are currently manufactured are known to support the PPD file format.

How to open PPD files

Important: Different programs may use files with the PPD file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your PPD file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
