What is a OVR file (a file with file extension OVR)?

Files that contain the .ovr file extension are most commonly associated with overlay files. Overlay files are files that are used by a variety of software applications and by the DOS operating system and were more common when DOS was a more popular operating system.

When a user runs a computer on the 640K MS-DOS OS, the overlay files free up system memory by sharing memory for code with other application modules. This allows the computer user to run more programs more quickly on the same machine.

Borland applications also use the .ovr file extension for overlay files. These OVR files have the same purpose as the DOS OVR files.
