What is a IDENTIFIER file (a file with file extension IDENTIFIER)?

Files that contain the .identifier file extension are most commonly associated with the Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browsing application. The INDENTIFIER files that are used by this Internet browser contain Internet Explorer zone identification information files that are referenced by the program during a user's Web browsing activity.

The .indentifier files are downloaded to a user's computer when he or she downloads an executable file from the Internet using the Internet Explorer Web browsing application. Even .doc files may be associated with a .identifier file since it is possible for these files to contain executable macros. Some users may need to "unblock" the IDENTIFIER file in order for it to function properly.
